Repeat listenings to an Italo Disco playlist on Spotify sparked a conversation over two tracks that seemed to use the same chord pattern.

Digging deeper into the Italo Disco legend it became clear that a maverick producer by the name Bobby Orlando (Bobby O) directly used a riff from “Slice Me Nice” by Fancy in the track “Helpless”, that he produced for The Flirts.

It was from this, and listening to several bad mashup attempts, that the idea to create a bootleg version was conceived…

This track was made for a remix competition in which the winner got their remix released as part of the official remix package for ‘Set The Controls’ on Elite Force’s U&A Recordings.

Having just installed the software Fruity Loops, I decided to use this competition as a reason to teach myself how to use it. Almost every night over 2.5 weeks in November 2010 was spent messing around with the samples provided & layering instrument samples chosen from a Computer Music Magazine DVD until it was submission time. Unfortunately, I hadn’t enough time to learn how to master my track & thus it sounded pretty awful, Jeff T won the competition with an awesome take on the track (available from Beatport here), and that was that.

Now, 5 months later, I’ve re-opened the FL project file & mastered the track as best as possible on my old XP machine, that for some reason made playback crackle after running each element through a compressor and in the end forced me to tweak the settings blind (or deaf, however you like to look at it).

“Evolution” is the last in my trilogy of Dubstep-inspired mixes.

With the immergence of Dubstep into the “top 40” via the likes of Magnetic Man (Skream, Benga, Artwork), I wanted to continue to steer clear of anything commercial with this latest mix. Starting with filthy basslines, this mix progresses through atmospheric 4×4 & two-step (compliments of Scuba), old school breakbeat (The Future Sound Of London), finishing with some down tempo beats courtesy of iTAL tEK & The Black Dog.
